[Hank Chaney – Faulkner County Extension Agent] Today we have been discussing the possibilities of edible soybeans [Picture of edible soybeans in a bowl] or specialty type soybeans whereby we might have the opportunity for folks in the Arkansas River Valley [Map of the outline of the state of Arkansas showing soybean production] to produce a crop that is similar to what regular beans would be, [Picture of edible soybean plants] but yet they’re like a vegetable bean as well. [Picture of a soybean field. Slide - Vegetable Soybean - Higher profit potential; "Niche Market"] Hopefully the potential for profits will be somewhat better than what we’re currently looking at with traditional soybean production. We’re just trying to see what we can do to offer an alternative or a niche market to the folks in the valley under a limited type of acreage.

Slide - Vegetable Soybean - Same equipment; Custom harvester] The type of production we’re talking about, edible beans or specialty beans, we’re basically using the same type of equipment that the grower already has purchased or has that he’s using to produce conventional or Roundup Ready beans. The big difference would be that it would be a specialty type of harvester that would have to come in on the particular type of specialty crop that we are talking about today, edamame soybeans.
[Picture of a soybean field. Slide - Conventional bean program; Harveswt at R 6] Edamame production is very much similar in terms of growing regular soybeans. There’d be a conventional soybean instead of a Roundup Ready technology bean. It would be one in which we would have to pay very close attention to the time frame to cut. We would harvest the bean at growth stage R6.
