[Narrator - Video showing a tractor in a field] Arkansas' 2010 soybean crop is off to a fast start, but progress was slowed in parts of the state due to too much rain in the northeast and not enough moisture in the southeast [Arkansas state map with county outlines with a drawing of a thunder cloud in the northeast and sunshine in the southeast]. Jefferson County Extension Staff Chair Don Plunkett says the May 14-16 rain gave growers "a million dollar weekend."
[Arkansas state map with Woodruff county highlighted with a drawing of a thunder cloud 1/2" to 4"] Woodruff County extension staff chair Eugene Terhune says his county had between a half up to four inches of rain, bringing planting to a halt for a second straight week in some places.
For the week ending May 16, the crop was 38 percent emerged, well ahead of last year's 17 percent. The National Agricultural Statistics Service says soybean emergence is also outpacing the five-year average of 28 percent. Overall, 51 percent of the crop was planted, a gain of 10 percentage points from the previous week. That's compared to just 26 percent last year and the 42 percent five-year average.
